Chavez Weight Disclosed by The WBC at 173-Pounds

by Miguel Rivera

The World Boxing Council has finally disclosed the 30-day safety weight for WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In a very surprising development, Chavez weighed in at 173-pounds, which is over a pound less than Ronald Hearns, who was 174.5. Chavez's weight is surprised, when considering how much bigger he appeared, in comparison to Hearns, during Monday's press conference to announce the fight. The safety weigh-in was held on Thursday, but only Hearns' weight was revealed, which led to widespread speculation in Mexico that Chavez was struggling to make the WBC's 30-day limit. Sources have told BoxingScene.com that Chavez didn't comply with the safety weigh-in until Friday. Chavez-Hearns takes place on September 17 in Mexico.
