Former welterweight champion Carlos Quintana of Puerto Rico believes his countryman, Juan Manuel Lopez, may benefit from the recent punishment of a one-year suspension, which the boxer received from the boxing commission of Puerto Rico.Juanma was punished for calling Puerto Rican referee Robert Ramirez Sr. a gambler. Following last month's TKO defeat at the hands of Orlando Salido, Juanma took aim at Ramirez during a televised interview. The boxer was unhappy with the referee's decision to stop the fight in the tenth round. Not long after, Juanma publically apologized to the referee and said he agreed with Ramirez's decision to stop the fight.Because of the televised comments, the boxing commission of Puerto Rico held a hearing, which Juanma attended. The commission issued their punishment earlier this week. Juanma has appealed the one-year suspension. If the appeal fails, he may be able to fight as early as May 2013.Quintana felt Juanma took some punishment in the loss to Salido and a one-year of inactivity could actually help the former featherweight champion. Inactivity has an effect. I am one of those fighters who sometimes spends a lot of idle time between fights, but its not always a bad thing. I will not give my opinion on whether the punishment was fair or not, but I think Juanma could use it to rest. The latest fight [with Salido] was very tough and he received a lot of punishment. Perhaps the rest might suit him to heal [his body], think about his future and then resume his career with more force, Quintana told Les Jiminez.Tags: Juan Manuel Lopez , Carlos Quintana
