Team Brook: We Wanted Devon Alexander For July 7th

By Phil D. Jay

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed to WBN that he has been in touch with Golden Boy Promotions about a possible fight between Kell Brook and Devon Alexander.Hearn, who has set aside a date of July 7th for undefeated Brook’s next outing, was looking into pitting ‘The Special One’ against the former unified world light-welterweight champion, until Alexander was handed his own date of August 18th.“We wanted the Alexander fight for Sheffield on July 7th,” Hearn told World Boxing News.“But basically, it is a non-starter as Golden Boy wanted the fight in the US in August.”The ambition of Brook’s promoter is there to be admired as Alexander is another indication of the calibre of opponent that Hearn is hoping to bring over to the UK. It follows an offer made to former IBF champion Joshua Clottey, who rejected the fight as he can no longer make the weight and remains focused on fighting at 154lbs.Brook, 25, stands on the verge of securing at least a world title eliminator after extending his unbeaten record to 27 bouts recently in a dominant win over Matthew Hatton and Hearn will continue future dialogue with GBP as he seeks the fill the opposite corner at the Motorpoint Arena this summer.“Alexander is the kind of opposition we want to be facing now. Devon is a great fighter. We are still talking with Golden Boy but it’s unlikely for July 7 but who knows down the line,” added Hearn.Phil D.
