Margarito: If Chavez Beats Rubio, I Will Fight Him in June

By Miguel Rivera

As a kid, former champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27KOs) idolized hall-of-fame icon Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. If everything goes as planned, Margarito could possibly challenge the son of his idol, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0, 31KOs), in the month of June. Next Saturday in San Antonio, Texas - Chavez defends his title against the most dangerous opponent of his entire career, countryman Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46KOs). The plans are, that if Chavez beats Marco Antonio Rubio, then the two of us would meet in June. I don't want that fight because his dad was my idol, but boxing is a business and I'm here to fight. Of course I would accept the fight against Chavez, because I think he is at the top level. I have the physical dimensions to go up to middleweight and I can win and then face Miguel Cotto again or Sergio Martinez, Margarito said.Margarito has lost three of his last four, including a brave effort in his last fight against Miguel Cotto in December. Margarito's eye was nearly swollen shut and the fight was stopped. I recovered well from the operation on my eye and I can continue in boxing. I hope the fight against Chavez is finalized, so I can start light training, Margarito said.Tags: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr , Antonio Margarito
